Industry Trade Ads
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What exactly is an industry trade ad?
A: Industry trade ads are basically expensive marketing advertisements that the record label puts out "prompting" the radio station to play the song/album more often. Oftentimes, you'll find that these trade advertisements contain photos and/or artwork that is not available anywhere else. The magazines which publish the trade ads are only available to a select few, mostly radio station managers who determine what gets played and what doesn't. The most famous magazine is "Hits Magazine." Try getting a subscription to that bad boy! The FMQB is another magazine that publishes trade ads.
Q: What size and quality are these trade ads?
A: Most of the trade ads are your typical 8.5" x 11" in size and made of THICK cardstock paper with a nice glossy finish. Sometimes you'll run into a larger size 11" x 14" ad from Billboard or similar type magazine. The 11" x 14" ads are generally of flimsy magazine paper quality.
Q: Where can I get these trade ads?
A: Unfortunately, the only place you can get these ads is on Ebay. Unless, of course, you happen to work at a radio station in which you might be able to convince the boss to let you rip up the Hits Magazine! Generally, the more recent ads such as The Space Between and Everyday can be had for $5-$10. The older ads such as Ants Marching, Satellite, and What Would You Say generally demand a few extra bucks as they are much harder to come by. I've seen trade ads sell for as much as $50.00 before, so be on the lookout.
Q: What's the big deal with trade ads?
A: There really is nothing special about them other than being highly collectible for us nutty DMB fans. If you don't like them, FINE! If you do, have fun collecting!!
NOTE: If you own a DMB trade ad that you DO NOT see on this page, could you please drop me an email and provide me as much information as possible. Naturally, a full-size 96dpi scan would be best. THANKS!
